There's no error. You didn't do anything, as the only command you issued was "EXP". It displayed a short help screen, which shows options you can use with the EXP command.

Do you really (still) use Oracle 8i? Here's documentation, read it.

You do NOT backup a database with an export.

What is the relation with this and what you want to do ("take backup of database")?

i have mentioned in my my post that i used following code also but i am getting the same error and if i run 'EXP' cmd only then that should also work after that it asks for username and password.

exp user/password@sid file=path:\filename.dmp full=y rows=y grants=y;

try eliminating the the rightmost semicolon character at the end of the command line.

Agree with BS. I have never put a semi colon, never thought about it. Unlike sqlplus, semi colon won't be recognized in the command line. That's my opinion.

@OP, also, as Oracle suggests, you can try giving prameters one by one when prompted. I don't have 8i to verify, however fingers crossed with Oracle's suggestion.

The problem has nothing to do with the semi-colon which is perfectly valid on Windows DOS box and just signal the end of the command and the rest of the line is comment:
